Tips to Keep Insects Out of the House

Friday, October 3, 2014

Insects in the home can be a mere annoyance, but some bugs and other pests may damage your house or pose a health risk to you and your family members if they are allowed to establish themselves.

Following are some tips to prevent insects from invading your home. If you have a pest problem, or if traditional methods—such as bug sprays or traps—are ineffective, it’s advisable to consult with a pest control expert.

Know Your Enemy

The types of insects that find their ways into homes vary by region and climate. In Colorado, for example, roaches are relatively rare, but you may find yourself facing ants or wasps. The Colorado State University Extension provides detailed insect information on resident bugs and ways to cope with their presence.

Eliminate Fundamental Needs

Just like people, insects require water, food and shelter to survive. If you eliminate access to these resources, you decrease the chances that pests will try to make your house their home. Make sure you don’t have standing water, and that all pipes, faucets and other water sources are sealed. Maintain clean food preparation areas, and properly store all food; don’t leave open bags or containers. Finally, inspect your home for potential entry points and fill any cracks or gaps.

Cleanliness is Key

Outdoor trash that sits near your home should be completely sealed so as not to entice nearby bugs. Inside, bedding should be regularly washed and couches routinely vacuumed to prevent dust mites and bed bugs.

Controlling Pests

While many retail remedies such as insect sprays and traps can control minor pest issues, it’s important to read and follow the directions carefully. These products often contain chemicals than can seriously harm people and pets if not used correctly.
