Ant Control Tips

Monday, July 6, 2015

When ants form ant hills and start marching toward the doors and windows of your home, it’s time to take action to ensure these pests don’t make their way into your lovely abode. There are many easy, inexpensive ways to keep ants away from you home this summer. If you need pest control in Castle Rock or a surrounding area of Denver, please contact Animal & Pest Control Specialist, Inc. today to schedule a consultation. But before doing that, here are some tips to help keep these creepy crawlies out of your home for good.

Place cinnamon sticks or garlic in areas where ants are prone to enter the home. Window tracks, doorways and corners around your home are prime places to place ant repellents. While garlic cloves certainly don’t smell as nice as cinnamon sticks, they work really well, so if you can stand the smell of garlic, try it out. Just peel and slice a few cloves and place them where you notice the ants. After a day or two of garlic cloves being left out, you will probably notice your ants are long gone.

White vinegar works great to keep a number of pests away from the home. Just spray apple cider vinegar or white vinegar from a spray bottle wherever you have seen ants in your home. The fungicidal and insecticidal properties in the vinegar help prevent ants from ever returning to your humble abode.

Mint is not only inexpensive but it smells great and works very well to keep pesky ants away. Mint destroys the smelling capabilities of ants and keeps them from entering the house. There are several ways to use mint to prevent pesky ants from making their way into your home. First, plant mint around your home, especially near doors and close to areas where you have seen anthills. Also, place mint leaves in and around windows, and if ants are entering your pantry, place some mint leaves on the shelves and in the corners.

Other herbs and plants that give off a strong aroma work well to keep ants away. Some of the best herbs and plants to place throughout your home include:

  • Basil
  • Garlic
  • Chili Peppers
  • Eucalyptus
  • Lavender
  • Peppermint
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
